The book of Revelation is one of my favourite books in the Bible because there are so many delicious truths about Jesus there. The book starts with Jesus speaking to the seven churches in Asia at that time, correcting some and praising some. I believe that we’re in a prophetic season and those words of rebuke and praise hold the same relevance now, as they did thousands of years ago.

What puzzled me the most was that of the Ephesian church, they seemed to be doing well but then Jesus rebukes them for forgetting their first love, for many years I’ve wondered what that first love was, and how they forgot it? Then the amazing Holy Spirit took me through and explained it to me.

You see, Jesus was talking about the message of the gospel that they first heard. Paul in his letter to them said: “And He came and preached the good news of peace to you [Gentiles] who were far away, and peace to those [Jews] who were near.”

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2:17‬ ‭AMP‬‬.

Somehow the Ephesian church had forgotten the message they first heard and had gone into trying to earn favour with God by their works, and Jesus wouldn’t have it. Jesus said this to them: “Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works...”

‭‭Revelation‬ ‭2:5‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

How does a believer fall? Paul answers that question for us in the book of Galatians

“You have been severed from Christ if you seek to be justified [that is, declared free of the guilt of sin and its penalty, and placed in right standing with God] through the Law; you have fallen from grace [for you have lost your grasp on God’s unmerited favour and blessing].”

‭‭Galatians‬ ‭5:4‬ ‭AMP‬‬

Today many Christians don’t even know what the gospel is, we are hopelessly trying to earn favour with God, the very thing He freely gives to us in Christ Jesus. We have forgotten our first love, the glorious message of Christ which reveals to us the forgiveness of our sins and a new life in Jesus. The gospel isn’t only for when we get saved, but for our daily living.

Jesus also talked about doing the “first works”, well what are those?

In the letter that Paul wrote to the Ephesian church he also talked about this:

“For by grace you have been saved by faith. Nothing you did could ever earn this salvation, for it was the love gift from God that brought us to Christ!”

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2:8‬ ‭TPT‬‬

Faith is the first work! That’s the first thing we did, we believed! That’s what brought us into Christ! our faith! And it’s not something we believe once but what we have to believe every day. We have a love gift from God that we can never earn, our performance good or bad isn’t required before we enjoy this gift, the only requirement is our faith.

Paul also states this in Galatians:

“Now it is clear that no one is justified [that is, declared free of the guilt of sin and its penalty, and placed in right standing] before God by the Law, for “The righteous (the just, the upright) shall live by faith.”

‭‭Galatians‬ ‭3:11‬ ‭AMP‬‬

Beloved remember your first love, and live in it every day, enjoy being the beloved of God, remember that your righteousness is a gift from God and you can never do anything to earn, live every day in the faith in what Jesus has done for you and your love for Him will grow to exceed your expectations.
